Kings of Navarre's and Automobile Princes' city

"Pau is the most exciting view as seen from the ground, like Naples is the most exciting view as seen from the sea". These words from French poet Lamartine come back to the mind of any person watching the breathtaking panorama over the Pyrenees offered by the Bearn capital. This privileged location just at the Spain border is not the lesser asset of the city, former Kings of Navarre's fief as well as French most popular King Henri IV's cradle. For more than a century, the Pau story is also the one of its Grand Prix, which has seen the growth of the most talented pilots

A favourable weather and a hospitable architecture make Pau's success during 19C, the first English tourists opening the way. Actually, Pau became then the place to be for the international jet set.

City of sports

Looking for open air and entertainment, this new kind of population makes of Pau the "King of Sports": horse racing, polo, golf… But no doubt that the most beautiful pages of Pau sporting book were written by the aviation and automobile pionners in early 20C.

…Motor sports, of course

Following Wilbur Wright's footsteps when he did he first flight in Pau in 1903, the town becomes the "Aviation Mecca" until WWI. Three years earlier, in 1900, brand new Automobile Club du Béarn, organises in Pau the very first "Grand Prix" of motor racing history, a name borrowed from the horse races, very famous in Pau. Nevertheless, the date to be remembered is for sure 1933, year when the race was first run as a street circuit.

…Pilots never cast a clout till May is out

Today, in May, the city lives at the engine sounds' rhythm, and the public carries away for those young drivers all set to add to their prize list, the name of the circuit where Nuvolari, Fangio, Trintignant, Jim Clark and more recently, Lewis Hamilton have won fame…
